Out here in rural North Dakota, the sight of wheat fields as they change from a soft and gentle green to briliant and vibrant gold is both beautiful and melencholy. While we so enjoy the colors and aroma in the air, we also know it means the end of another summer and another season.
I find every harvest season has a touch of nostalgia that comes with it. A reminder to pay attention. A time of quiet reflection. And, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by this every year. Our neighbors, Tom & George, farm the land around us, so we take great pleasure in watching the scene that unfolds every year – and can understand only slightly what they must feel – a sense of completion, another season fulfilled.
“Harvest Time” is one of those wonderful, picturesque scenes that played out in our ‘backyard’ (actually just south of us on the same section). The day was one of those simply perfect August days – only a slight breeze, a sun setting ever so brilliantly in the west. I’d asked my son, Ryan, if he’d like to come with on a little photo expo – and he couldn’t understand why we had to wait til so late. Wait. Just wait. That sun will hit the right spot and that will be our time. When we arrived at the harvest spot down the road from us, they were busy as could be while we walked out to the middle of that field. I’m sure they all thought we were just a little odd to be wandering out in the middle of a field with a camera in tow! But, the images were spectacular – every one of them. This was my favorite. Tom and George enjoyed it, as did their nephew, Mike Kozojed – the guy doing the combine work. And, BONUS!, we won an NDNA photo award for this image!
